Roughly 8 to 12 lesser bosses appear across the world, drawn from cult leaders, rival claimants and two-element wrecks. Besides them, only the four Guardians and the antagonist are truly one-of-a-kind.

Elemental weaknesses

Together with standing near a matching elemental source (see Spells), this is one of the two things that decide which element is worth reaching for. The opposite pairs are Fire against Water, and Earth against Wind. An elemental enemy resists its own element and is weak to its opposite.

  • Saturated creatures are the sharp case: overfull of their element, brutal with it, badly exposed to its opposite.
  • People and ordinary wildlife carry no element; any resistance comes from what they are — heavy armour, and so on.

Two-element wrecks

The antagonist's failed attempts at making others hold power like himself — wrecks holding two elements instead of four, dangerous and pitiable, and a preview of what fusion does to a body long before the finale asks the hero to do it deliberately. Known so far:

A molten wreckEarth + FireEast, a highland craterEarth and Fire together make lava

A wreck holding an opposite pair covers its own weaknesses, which makes that variety the hardest. Other combinations are expected to appear too.

The four Guardians

Fire, Water, Earth and Wind each sealed themselves into a spire centuries ago, so their combined power could never gather in one place. That seal is failing, and they are its first victims, not villains — centuries of containing their own power has done to them exactly what the overflow does to everything else. None of them can stop leaking; killing one simply ends the leak.

They degrade by sequence, not by identity. Whichever spire the player reaches first holds the most lucid Guardian — able to explain what the seal is and ask the hero for the ending. The last reached is barely a being at all: just an element holding a shape, with no conversation and no mercy asked. This keeps the world genuinely open instead of forcing a route.

Boss fights

Guardian fights demand different elements at different phases, and facing a Guardian with its own element is the player's worst option, since it resists its own element. A Guardian's arena can change as the fight goes on — the Fire Guardian's second phase floods its floor, and suddenly there is water to work with.

Spoiler: The finale — click to reveal

Beating the antagonist in the finale requires fusion — holding all four elements inside one body at once — which is the exact act that destroyed him, and the exact thing all four Guardians died to prevent. The hero does the forbidden thing knowingly. See Lore and History for the full story.
